As we approach Earth Day, I am reminded of one of the biggest environmental threats today and that's plastic pollution. Plastic is flexible, strong, light weight and cheap, and it is those desirable qualities that have lead to massive over-consumption worldwide. It's virtually impossible to avoid plastic these days, but we should all try to use and discard less...FAR less!
One look at the disturbing picture above should be enough to convince you to do so. Because plastics do not easily biodegrade, plastic degradation at sea has been estimated at somewhere between 450 to 1,000 years! That's an awful long time for that plastic yogurt cup you just tossed to be floating around in the ocean.
Ready for change? Use this Plastic Pollution Calculator to estimate your plastic consumption and then make a plan to reduce it.
Remember the 3 R's:
- Reduce your consumption of plastic!
- Reuse your plastic containers!
- Recycle them at the end of their life!
We CAN do more. We MUST do more. Not only on Earth Day but every day!
